What are Five Minutes?
Not a whole lot in the scheme of a day – but over a period of time it’s the daily actions that can change a life.
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
I have observed that most of us wake up in the morning and pretty much do what we did yesterday. Our thoughts, words, habits, lifestyle are habits and frankly, if we are honest with ourselves, we pick up some bad habits along the way.
Not getting to the gym in the morning
Eating food that we know isn’t great for us
Slamming cups of coffee or energy drinks because we didn’t get enough sleep
Buying something we don’t need and/or can’t afford
And on and on it goes
So how do we begin to slay through the chaos in our lives?
One way is this nifty little 5-minute journal. It’s a GREAT way to begin new thoughts and ultimately new ways of living.
Who doesn’t like to be inspired? It’s an awesome way to wake up your mind and start your day.
What would make today great?
Great weather! Kids doing great! Boss reasonable! Magic fairies cleaning up my mess! Unfortunately, none of those things are in our control. The key here is what things do I have control over that would make my day great. For me – some days it’s making the yoga class. It’s attempting the elusive forearm stand. It’s making dinner. It’s eating well. It’s writing this post 🙂 It’s doing what you love – if only for a fraction of your day.
Let your mind wander and dream for a minute. And dare I say – make it about YOU and YOUR dreams and aspirations.
We are all AMAZING – in each of our own ways. Why is it so hard to say so? Why can we self-deprecate but not appreciate? In my opinion, we are afraid. It takes a special kind of bravery to accept ourselves just as we are…the GOOD as well as the BAD…because there is this inherent fear that our GOOD just won’t be GOOD ENOUGH – so if we don’t lay it out there we won’t be compared and judged. This is a terrible way to live…it’s stifling and it’s a waste of your good gifts. God gave us talents and he wants us to use them – don’t be afraid; be inspired.
Some days my affirmations are where I am today – affirming something that already exists. Other days it’s more where I want to be – dreaming and affirming that I can be there with dedication and hard work. Slay the Chaos is a perfect example. I have a dream but some days I’m not sure how to get there. My affirmation is that I am smart and a hard worker and this adventure will be successful.
3 Amazing Things
I am totally a morning person – and I rock along until 4-5p depending on the day. And then seeps in the bad habit of wanting to just gel on the couch, watch lots of television, then head to bed with a good book. Lots of distraction and not a lot of reflection. This journal makes reflection easy, manageable, and a habit. This is the time to reflect back on the day – what was amazing? Where did I rock the day? How did I do on my dreams today?
What could I have done better
Totally not a time to beat ourselves up – unless of course you did beat yourself up during the day and you can go ahead and write “stop beating myself up” here. It’s a time to look at your day and see where you could use some improvement. You can’t change a bad habit if you don’t acknowledge you have the bad habit.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~ Aristotle.
Great little journal – a great first step towards journaling and your chaos journey.
